The conference gathered leading experts in pediatric bone marrow transplantation and Thalassemia treatment from Italy, Germany, Thailand, India, Japan, the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines… Within the framework of the event, Hue Central Hospital held a ceremony to celebrate 20 successful allogeneic bone marrow transplants for pediatric Thalassemia patients, marking a significant advancement in specialized pediatric hematology care at the hospital.
The bone marrow transplant program for children with severe Thalassemia was launched by Hue Central Hospital in September 2024, with the support of Prof. Lawrence Faulkner (Italy) and the DKMS organization (Germany). In less than two years, the hospital has successfully performed 20 transplants for pediatric patients with severe Thalassemia. Following the transplant, the pediatric patients are in stable health, continuing to develop physically, and gradually returning to age-appropriate daily activities and schooling.
Among the transplanted cases, 7 involved blood type mismatch and were performed using the desensitization method, a technique applied in Vietnam for the first time. Each transplant requires meticulous preparation, treatment, and close monitoring, with coordination across multiple specialties including Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation, Intensive Care, Blood Transfusion, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Infection Control, Nutrition, and Nursing.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, congratulated the medical team on their achievements and expressed deep gratitude for the support and partnership of DKMS, ACCL, St. Jude, as well as domestic and international charitable organizations.
Thalassemia is a type of inherited hemolytic anemia. For severe cases, patients require long-term treatment, which significantly impacts their health, physical development, and quality of life. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potentially curative treatment for carefully selected patients.
Building on the success of these 20 transplant cases, Hue Central Hospital announced that the hospital would continue to develop its pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation program toward safety, efficacy, sustainability, and scalability. In the coming time, the hospital expects to implement haploidentical stem cell transplantation, thereby expanding treatment opportunities for more pediatric patients with severe Thalassemia and providing them a chance to improve their quality of life.
