Successful Heart Transplant Gives New Lease on Life to Patient with Organ Failure

HNN.VN - On the morning of August 11, leaders of Hue Central Hospital said the hospital had held a discharge ceremony for patient N.T.L., 34, from Quang Ngai Province, who recently underwent the hospital’s 24th heart transplant. After nearly two months of intensive treatment, the patient has made a good recovery, with stable health indicators, and was deemed fit to return home.

Before undergoing the transplant, the patient was diagnosed with end-stage heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy, with severely impaired cardiac function. Despite receiving multiple rounds of medical treatment at the hospital’s Cardiovascular Center, her condition continued to deteriorate, leaving her at high risk of death. She was subsequently placed on the emergency heart transplant waiting list.

On June 12, 2026, the hospital’s Transplant Center received donated organs from the family of patient P.H.N. (50 years old, from Binh Dinh), who died in a traffic accident. Upon receiving the information, intensive care, organ coordination, and transplant teams promptly worked together to complete the necessary medical procedures and prepare for the transplant.

At 3:43 p.m. on June 13, 2026, following a minute of silence to honor the organ donor, the heart transplant surgery officially began under the direct supervision of the hospital’s Board of Directors, with the participation of a multidisciplinary medical team. The transplant was successfully performed, marking another milestone in the hospital’s organ transplantation capabilities.

Following the surgery, the patient was closely monitored at the Department of Cardiovascular Intensive Care before being transferred to the Department of Cardiology for further treatment. Thanks to a comprehensive care regimen, the patient is now alert and hemodynamically stable, with no shortness of breath, while the transplanted heart is functioning well.

The success of the hospital’s 24th heart transplant has not only given the patient a new lease on life but also further demonstrated Hue Central Hospital’s expertise, organizational capacity, and multidisciplinary coordination in organ transplantation. Amid growing demand for heart transplants, mastering advanced transplantation techniques enables the hospital to provide treatment for more patients with end-stage heart failure proactively.

The recovery of patient N.T.L. is clear evidence of the effectiveness of heart transplantation at Hue Central Hospital, while also contributing to spreading awareness of the profound humanitarian value of organ donation in giving patients a second chance at life.
