HNN.VN - On June 22nd, Hue Central Hospital announced that patient P.M.D. (41 years old, residing in My Thuong Ward, Hue City), who received a heart transplant from a deceased brain-dead donor, had made a good recovery and was discharged from the hospital. This was the 23rd successful heart transplant performed at the hospital and the last of six recipients who received organs and tissues from the same brain-dead donor to be discharged.

According to the doctors, before receiving the transplant, P.M.D. suffered from end-stage heart failure, with a left ventricular ejection fraction of only 25 percent, and had been placed on the hospital’s heart transplant waiting list. The patient’s condition had become extremely critical, with a high risk of death, requiring circulatory support through extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). Following the heart transplant surgery, the patient’s condition improved significantly, and cardiac function recovered well. He no longer experiences shortness of breath, his left ventricular ejection fraction has increased to 65 percent, and his biochemical and hematological indicators remain stable within therapeutic limits.

Earlier, the hospital’s Organ Transplant Center received a donation request from the family of patient M.D.T., who had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in an accident. Despite intensive treatment efforts by medical staff, the patient’s condition did not improve. After the hospital’s evaluation council officially confirmed brain death in accordance with regulations, the hospital’s Organ Transplant Council coordinated with the National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation to identify suitable recipients from the national transplant waiting list.

Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, stated that the medical team made every possible professional effort and maintained close coordination among multiple specialties to make the most of every precious minute and hour in order to provide life-saving opportunities for patients awaiting transplants. He emphasized that the noble act of organ donation by the donor and the donor’s family had given many patients a second chance at life, continuing to write inspiring stories of hope and survival.

To date, all six recipients of organs and tissues from the brain-dead donor M.D.T., including recipients of the heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas, have shown positive recovery and have been discharged from the hospital. This success not only demonstrates the effectiveness of organ and tissue donation and transplantation activities but also highlights the growing professional capabilities of Hue Central Hospital in the field of organ transplantation, one of the most advanced and complex areas of modern medicine.
