Hue Central Hospital Successfully Performs Cross-Country Bone Marrow, Liver, and Heart Transplants

HNN.VN - On the morning of December 23, Hue Central Hospital (HCH) announced that they had held discharge ceremonies for four patients who underwent successful transplants: two allogeneic bone marrow transplants for the treatment of thalassemia, one liver transplant, and one cross-country heart transplant.

Up to date, Hue Central Hospital has performed 2,500 organ and tissue transplants and dozens of pediatric stem-cell transplants

This remarkable series of achievements not only affirms the hospital’s mastery of advanced medical techniques but also powerfully conveys the humanitarian significance of organ and stem-cell donation in saving lives.

In the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, Hue Central Hospital carried out its 13th and 14th allogeneic bone marrow transplants for pediatric patients with thalassemia - a congenital hemolytic disorder requiring lifelong blood transfusions. Notably, the 13th transplant involved patient Nguyen Trung T. (26 months old, Gia Lai), in whom there was a major ABO blood group incompatibility between the donor and the recipient. Instead of applying conventional, high-cost methods, the medical team implemented a novel technique: gradually infusing small volumes of the donor’s blood type into the recipient prior to transplantation. This approach helped minimize red blood cell depletion, preserve the stem cell yield, and reduce treatment costs. After more than one month, the patient showed good recovery, gained weight, hematopoietic cell lineages stabilized, and the chimerism rate reached 98.6%.

The 14th bone marrow transplant was performed for patient Nguyen Thanh T. (6.5 years old, Dong Nai), with the donor being a 3-year-old sibling. Although several complications occurred during the transplantation process - such as neutropenic fever, gingival hypertrophy, and hemorrhagic cystitis - close monitoring and intensive care enabled a rapid recovery. After nearly one month, the child gained 1 kg, hemoglobin levels reached 11.6 g/dL, and the patient met discharge criteria, to the great joy of the family.

Alongside stem cell transplantation, Hue Central Hospital successfully carried out two cross-country organ transplants simultaneously. The fifth liver transplant was performed for pediatric patient M.V.U.N. (8 years old, Hue City), who was suffering from advanced progressive cirrhosis. After receiving donor organ coordination from a brain-dead donor, the liver transplant team urgently traveled to Ba Ria Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) to retrieve the liver, transported it by air to Hue, and completed the transplant in the early morning of November 10, 2025. Following surgery, the patient recovered steadily, with liver function parameters within normal limits.

The 21st cross-country heart transplant was performed for patient N.M.C. (56 years old, Quang Ngai), who was in severe acute heart failure with an ejection fraction of only 18.5%. The donated heart was coordinated from Cho Ray Hospital, transported promptly to Hue, and successfully transplanted on the morning of November 14, 2025. Following a period of intensive care, the patient’s cardiac function improved markedly, with the ejection fraction reaching 55–60%, and overall health stabilized.

The success of these transplants is the result of close coordination among hospital departments, together with timely support from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, central-level hospitals, relevant authorities, and airlines. To date, Hue Central Hospital has performed more than 2,500 organ and tissue transplants, along with dozens of pediatric stem cell transplants - a number that underscore the hospital’s pioneering role in transplantation medicine in Vietnam.
