First Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Performed
HNN.VN - On the afternoon of April 29, Hue Central Hospital (HCH) successfully performed a transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for the first time on a 76-year-old female patient from Da Nang. This marks the hospital’s first implementation of this technique.

The patient suffered from severe aortic valve stenosis with calcification, accompanied by heart failure and diabetes. The pressure gradient across the valve before the procedure was over 90 mmHg. After the intervention, the gradient normalized, the patient's hemodynamics stabilized, and she fully regained consciousness and recovered her health.
The procedure was part of a scientific session titled "Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation with Self-Expanding HYDRA Valve in Severe Aortic Stenosis Patients", for cardiologists and specialists from across the country.
According to Dr. Ho Anh Binh, Director of the Cardiovascular Center and head of the intervention team, TAVI is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery, intended for high-risk surgical patients or those unwilling to undergo open surgery. Meanwhile, every year, the Cardiovascular Center performs more than 150 aortic valve replacement surgeries.
During the TAVI procedure, doctors insert a prosthetic valve to replace the severely narrowed aortic valve. This is a minimally invasive method that offers a gentle and effective solution for patients who cannot undergo open-heart surgery due to old age, poor clinical condition, or multiple serious underlying health issues such as heart failure, diabetes, and hypertension.
