This is a music night to commemorate the late great musician Trinh Cong Son, and also celebrate the 85th anniversary of his birth (February 28, 1939), and the 23rd anniversary of his death (April 1, 2001).

His songs, including “Hue, Saigon, Hanoi”, “Huyen thoai me”, “Mot coi di ve”, “Ha trang”, and “Diem xua”, etc., were performed by singers, which had attracted audiences who are Trinh music lovers as well as domestic and foreign visitors.

Besides, Hue Horn Orchestra also made an impression when performing medleys, namely “Biet dau nguon coi” - “O tro”, and “Cat bui” - “Tinh xa”; along with the songs titled “Quynh huong”, and “Uot mi”, etc. The performances were full of emotions in a still space by the Huong River at dusk.

Even though he has passed away for 23 years, the works of the late musician Trinh Cong Son still evoke emotions in the audience thanks to his profound lyrics, imbued with love, and humanistic philosophy. His lyrics and melodies always live forever in the hearts of music lovers in the Ancient Capital.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Musicians Association admitted three singers being its new members; they are Duong Huu Quang, Vo Thi Phuong Nhi, and Nguyen Bao Thanh.

“Once I happened to hear about my old native land…”

In 2000, in the short piece entitled “Hue Diary,” written when he returned for the first Hue Festival, musician Trinh Cong Son wrote, “When you have a place to return, or to visit from time to time, you are very fortunate. There, you have a river, a mountain, and you can find again your old friends whose hair used to be black has now turned grey. You might suddenly meet a Hue girl on the street and ask her, ‘Is there anything new in Hue now?’ And immediately, or perhaps by chance, she will recite the two lines from a poem by Bui Giang: “Da thua xu Hue bay gio/ Van con nui Ngu ben bo song Huong” (“Yes, sir, Hue now/ Still has Ngu Mount by the Huong river…”)
