Established in 2006 on the foundation of Hue’s royal court music tradition, Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre has become a core institution in preserving and promoting royal performing arts. Over the years, it has played a vital role in conserving and promoting various forms of royal court arts, including Nha Nhac (Hue Royal Court Music), royal court dance, royal court Tuong, Ca Hue (Hue-Singing), and the ceremonial rituals of the Nguyen Dynasty.
The theater has completed 28 scientific dossiers, research projects, and initiatives on heritage conservation and restoration. It has also organized numerous training programs for younger generations of artists, while bringing traditional music heritage education into schools, engaging tens of thousands of students.
Notably, in 2005, Professor Tran Van Khe personally taught a training course for Nha Nhac musicians in Hue, leaving a lasting legacy and making a significant contribution to the training of the next generation of practitioners.
Joining Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theater among the recipients of the 2026 Tran Van Khe Award were the Xam 48h Group and 6 distinguished individuals, including Meritorious Teacher Pham Thuy Hoan, Meritorious Artist Huynh Khai, Meritorious Artist Pham Van Mon, People’s Artist Ngo Tuyet Mai, Meritorious Artisan Nguyen Tan Khoa, and Dr. Mai My Duyen. The honorees were recognized for their enduring contributions to the research, education, performance, transmission, and promotion of Vietnam’s traditional music.
The Tran Van Khe Award was established to carry forward the vision of Professor Dr. Tran Van Khe (1921-2015), Vietnam’s foremost scholar of traditional music, who devoted his lifetime to preserving Vietnam’s traditional musical heritage and introducing it to the world. The award honors organizations and individuals with outstanding achievements in preserving and promoting the authentic values of Vietnam’s traditional music, thereby contributing to the wider appreciation of the country’s cultural heritage in contemporary society.
The Artistic Council of the 2026 Tran Van Khe Award, comprising Professor Tran The Bao, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi My Liem, Dr. Phan Thanh Hai, Dinh Thi Thanh Thuy (M.A.), Nguyen The Thanh, journalist, and Dr. Mai My Duyen, unanimously agreed to honor all 8 nominees for their sustained contributions to preserving and promoting Vietnam’s traditional music.
