Accordingly, the two gold medals were of Nguyen Tuan Phong (a 12th grader from Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, Bac Ninh Province), and Vo Hoang Hai (a 11th grader from High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences, under the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi). The two silver medals went to Nguyen Tuan Duong (a 12th grader from Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, Hai Phong City); and Le Viet Hoang Anh (a 12th grader from Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa Province). The bronze medalist was Phan The Manh (a 12th grader from Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, Bac Ninh Province).

The IPhO 2023 was hosted by Japan. After a year of being postponed and two years of being held in the form of online, the 53rd IPhO was held in person, from July 10 to 17, with the participation of 398 candidates from 84 countries and territories, making it the biggest IPhO ever.

According to the regulations of the IPhO 2023’s Board, candidates take the experiment exam on the first day, and the theory exam on the second day. Each exam has time duration of five hours. Though the questions in the theory and experiment exams this year are long, they are considered good, as the content is close to life and students in high school.

The excellent performance of the Vietnamese national team at the IPhO 2023 continues to be maintained. Thanks to these achievements, Vietnam is in the top of the IPhO 2023, affirming the quality of education, as well as the right direction in the Ministry of Education and Training’s efforts to detect, select and foster excellent students.

Vietnam’s oldest cadastral record preserved in Hue

Hue is a land that bears the imprint of the southward migration and territorial expansion undertaken more than 700 years ago by the people of ancient Thuan Hoa. Very few documents reveal the timing of these migration waves or the organization and formation of Vietnamese villages in the region. Yet during fieldwork, I gained access to several ancient Han-Nom documents recording the migration, land reclamation, and establishment of villages and communes. Most notably is a cadastral record dating to the 9th year of the Dai Hoa reign (1451) under King Le Nhan Tong, compiled exactly 575 years ago.
