Hue Central Hospital pioneers using LifePort kidney preservation technology

HNN.VN - As reported by Hue Central Hospital, they have marked a significant milestone in Vietnamese medicine by successfully performing the first kidney transplant in the country using the LifePort hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) system. This is a breakthrough in organ preservation technology, and opens a new chapter for Vietnam’s organ transplantation field.

Earlier, on the afternoon of October 17th, after receiving information from Thong Nhat Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) about an organ donation case from the patient Bui Thi P.L. (born 1964, Ho Chi Minh City) who was declared brain-dead, Hue Central Hospital collaborated with Thong Nhat Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital to retrieve multiple organs for allocation to waiting patients. Among them, two corneas and one kidney were transported to Hue, while the remaining kidney was transplanted to a patient in Ho Chi Minh City.

To optimize the quality of the donated organ, doctors from Hue Central Hospital decided to apply the LifePort kidney preservation system - a method used for the first time in Vietnam. Unlike traditional cold storage, this technology continuously pumps preservation solution through the kidney under controlled hypothermic conditions, maintaining “organ vitality” throughout the transport from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue. Thanks to this system, even though the donor was 61 years old and had underlying health conditions, the kidney was optimally preserved and remained in excellent condition for transplantation, with a cold ischemia time of up to 12 hours - a record in the history of Vietnamese organ transplantation.

The transplant was performed on patient Tran Q. (born 1983, Da Nang), who had previously undergone a kidney transplant 11 years ago. The surgery lasted more than two hours; the transplanted kidney quickly regained function, producing urine immediately in the operating room, and the patient did not require dialysis after surgery. So far, the patient’s health is stable, and kidney function is progressing well.

According to Professor Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, “The success of this kidney transplant using the LifePort system not only demonstrates the professional competence of our medical team but also proves that Vietnam has mastered one of the world’s most advanced organ preservation technologies, helping improve the quality of organ transplantation nationwide.”

Since its first kidney transplant in 2001, Hue Central Hospital has performed nearly 300 kidney transplants annually and more than 2.500 organ and tissue transplants, including heart, liver, kidney, and hematopoietic stem cell transplants. With a team of highly skilled specialists, modern facilities, and a pioneering spirit of innovation, the hospital continues to affirm its position as a leading organ transplantation center in Vietnam, bringing new life opportunities to thousands of patients across the country.
