Dr. Phan Thanh Hai made the remark while discussing the heritage economy at the scientific discussion titled “Current Situation and Solutions for Promoting Humanistic Values and Resources in the Development of Culture in Hue City”, which was held on the afternoon of December 17.
The discussion, held by Hue Institute for Development Studies in collaboration with the Institute for Social Sciences of the Central and Central Highlands, gathered a great number of experts and artisans.
According to Mr. Hai, Hue is moving toward a vision of “An Innovative City Built on Heritage”, the place where traditional values serve as a source of inspiration for innovation in education, tourism, and cultural industry.
“Hue is entering a new phase of development with both opportunities and challenges. If heritage is considered merely “a past to be admired”, Hue will be left behind. But by understanding the “language of heritage” and turning it into a form of soft power for the green - smart - sustainable development, Hue City can emerge as a role model for heritage city, not only in Vietnam but also across the region,” said Mr. Hai.
Also at the discussion, the head of the city’s cultural sector said that Hue’s 2026 plan places strong emphasis on linking heritage conservation with the development of cultural industries, the night-time economy, and high-quality tourism.
Meanwhile, according to Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Van, Deputy Director of Hue Institute for Development Studies, Hue is standing at a critical opportunity to transform its cultural values into sustainable economic resources as Vietnam accelerates the development of cultural industries. She noted that Hue is home to an elite pool of human capital, including “living treasures” concentrated in traditional craft villages. In terms of cuisine, Hue boasts 1,300 of Vietnam’s 1,700 documented dishes.
Also in the framework of the discussion, experts raised and discussed issues related to human resource development for safeguarding and enhancing the value of intangible cultural heritage, as well as the human-centered resources embedded in Hue’s way of life in the current context.
