Reducing plastic use when shopping at supermarkets

HNN.VN - On July 3, the project “Hue - A Plastic Reduction City in Central Vietnam”, funded by WWF-Norway, in collaboration with Co.op Mart Hue (Saigon Co.op), GO! Hue (Central Retail Vietnam), and AEON Hue (AEON Vietnam) organized the event “No Plastic Bag Month” 2025.

The program aims to raise consumers’ awareness, promote behavior change, and encourage the habit of using personal bags when shopping, thereby contributing to reducing plastic waste and pollution in Hue City.

With the theme “Bring Green Home,” the “No Plastic Bag Month” event conveys the message: Every household should take the initiative to reduce plastic waste when shopping at markets or supermarkets. Don’t let piles of plastic bags in the kitchen or single-use plastic products become a burden on your trash bin, your home, and the surrounding environment.

Let’s start with simple changes: bringing your own bags to the market, using eco-friendly bags instead of accepting plastic ones at checkout, and minimizing the use of single-use plastic products. A green, clean, and sustainable living space begins with everyday consumer choices.

In 2025, the “No Plastic Bag Month” event continues to receive strong support from major retail chains in Hue, helping to spread a green lifestyle and promote sustainable consumption habits within the community.

Plastic-reducing products are displayed at the event

GO! Hue supermarket has committed to not providing plastic bags at checkout counters on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from July 3 to July 31. At the same time, Co.opmart Hue will also stop offering plastic bags at checkout on the same days during that period. AEON Hue has pledged not to provide plastic bags at selected cashless express checkout counters on July 3. Starting from the first Monday of each month, customers shopping at cashless counters who do not use plastic bags provided by the supermarket will receive a discount of 1,000 VND on their total bill.

At the event, representatives from GO! Hue, Co.opmart Hue, and other participating businesses reaffirmed their commitment to reducing the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic products in their operations. They also shared concrete action plans aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and contributing to the development of an environmentally friendly Hue City.

The project “Hue - A Plastic Reduction City in Central Vietnam” is funded by WWF-Norway (through WWF-Vietnam) and carried out by Hue City People’s Committee. It aims to support the city in protecting its rivers, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems from plastic pollution, with the goal of reducing 30% plastic waste leakage by 2025.

The tracks of their tanks stretched over a thousand kilometers from A Luoi (Hue) to the Independence Palace, where they smashed through the gates and raised the victorious revolutionary flag atop the building, signaling total victory.
