Plastic-reduced tourism site launched in Tam Giang lagoon

Introducing the Ngu My Thanh - Con Toc plastic-reduced tourism site

Ngu My Thanh - Con Toc lies along the Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon, the largest lagoon system in Southeast Asia. The plastic-reduction model developed here not only helps conserve the natural landscape and support local livelihoods, but also shows a strong commitment to environmental protection, towards green tourism development.

With support from the Department of Tourism, the TVA Project, and local authorities, eight tourism service businesses in Quang Loi have pledged to implement specific measures to reduce plastic waste in their operations. These pioneers include: Tam Giang Quang Loi Community Tourism Cooperative, Con Toc Restaurant, Minh Cuc Restaurant, Tam Giang Seafood World Restaurant, Ly Huong Restaurant, Tam Giang Assembly Hall Restaurant, Huong Binh Restaurant, and Quynh Nhu Restaurant.

To support this transition, the TVA Project has provided key equipment such as glass water dispensers, water purifiers, plastic-reduction signage, and waste-sorting bins. Restaurants and tours are encouraged to use environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use plastics, including cloth bags and reusable containers, while reducing plastic bag usage.

Tourists enjoying immersive experiences in Ngu My Thanh - Con Toc

A standout feature of this lagoon area is the use of traditional bamboo trays for food presentation. This not only reduces waste but also enriches the cultural experience for visitors. “Green Houses” have also been installed at Con Toc Park and surrounding areas to collect recyclable waste and promote environmental awareness among locals and tourists.

On this occasion, Hue Tourism College has also collaborated with tour agencies to organize plastic-reduction tours at Ngu My Thanh - Con Toc. Tourists are introduced to the eight local businesses implementing waste-reduction measures and encouraged to use refillable bottles instead of plastic ones, while avoiding nylon bags and single-use plastics. The tour also includes a boat ride across the lagoon, operated with eco-friendly practices, helping tourist enjoy the natural beauty of the waterways while becoming more conscious of environmental conservation.
