Assessing the vulnerability to climate change in Tam Giang – Cau Hai lagoon system

From the beginning of August to the end of November, 2017, CSSH assessed the vulnerability to  climate change in Tam Giang – Cau Hai lagoon system, mainly focusing on the lagoon fishing communities in the hamlets near estuaries and wetlands.

The result shows the list of areas affected by disasters, climate change, and it also reveals infrastructural damage, loss of livelihoods caused by storms, erosions, landslides, water scarcity, etc. In addition to the vulnerability assessment result, the research unit also offer the solution to improve the climate change adaptive capacity for the vulnerable fishing communities along Tam Giang – Cau Hai.

Spanning a total water surface area of more than 210 km², Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system,consisting of three main lagoons: Tam Giang, Thuy Tu, and Cau Hai, is often praised as a natural masterpiece bestowed upon Hue. The Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system connects to the East Sea via the Thuan An inlet (Tam Giang lagoon) and the Tu Hien inlet (Cau Hai lagoon). It is the largest brackish lagoon system in Vietnam as well as all of Southeast Asia with an incredibly rich and diverse ecosystem.

That was the theme of the national-level scientific conference organized on June 21 by the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Hue City (Union of Associations) in collaboration with the Department of Health, the Department of Science and Technology, Hue Central Hospital, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University, the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Association, and the Infectious Diseases Association of the city. The event gathered leading experts in health, environment, and agriculture - forestry from Vietnam and abroad.
