The forum was held as Vietnam intensifies the implementation of policies to minimize plastic waste and promote a circular economy, co-organized by the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Institute for Development Studies, and the TVA/WWF-Vietnam Project.
Speaking at the forum, Mr. Hoang Hai Minh emphasized that for Hue City, environmental protection and plastic waste reduction have always been identified as one of key tasks in the city’s orientation toward green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly urban development.
Since 2022, with the support from the TVA Project, funded by WWF Norway through WWF-Vietnam, Hue City has gradually implemented various pilot initiatives and models to reduce plastic waste in the community, promote waste segregation at source, enhance collection and recycling capacity, as well as encouraging businesses to adopt plastic reduction solutions in production and business activities.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, Director of the Oceans Program, WWF-Vietnam, stated: “The forum is an important opportunity for businesses, management agencies, and development organizations to review the plastic packaging value chain in Vietnam, identify opportunities and challenges, thereby promoting feasible solutions to reduce plastic waste generation at the source and strengthen packaging recovery”.
From a local perspective, Mr. Cung Trong Cuong, Director of Hue Institute for Development Studies, emphasized: “Hue aims to become a model for green and sustainable urban development. Hosting this national forum in Hue not only helps connect businesses with plastic reduction initiatives, but also creates opportunities for the city to apply effective pilot models for packaging reduction, recovery, and recycling, thereby contributing to the circular economy goals of Hue City and Vietnam”.
