The exam this year is bringing together 3,383 participants, divided into 2 categories: specialized and non-specialized. The subjects include Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, English, French, Japanese, Informatics, etc.
For the specialized category, the candidates are 12th-grade students and some students from 10th-grade and 11th-grade, coming from Quoc Hoc - Hue High School for the Gifted and School for the Gifted, Hue University of Sciences. Additionally, 12th-grade students from other high schools who have been selected for the competition team and have achieved at least good academic performance and conduct are also eligible.
As for the non-specialized category, the candidates are 12th-grade students and some 11th-grade students from high schools and continuing education centers, who attained at least good academic performance and conduct in the previous school year, and have been selected for the competition team.
The exam takes place from October 3 to 5. The foreign language subjects are conducted in a combined format of written and multiple-choice tests, assessing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Informatics exam consists of practical programming on computers using C/C++ or Python. The remaining subjects are tested in written form.
The exam questions are aligned with the 2018 General Education Curriculum, designed with differentiated levels to encourage critical thinking and the application of knowledge into practice.
The exam results serve as the basis for awarding the title of city-level excellent student. Furthermore, the Department of Education and Training also uses it to select members for the teams that will compete in the National Excellent Student Exam. This is also an opportunity for schools to review their training quality and adjust plans for nurturing talented students in the coming years.
