Phuoc Son and his lively giant fish

The Giant… Fish

Inside Son’s home in Vy Da Ward, what struck us most were the images of giant fish. With the graceful curves of their fins and meticulously crafted scales, the fish appear vivid and lifelike, both soulful and visually striking.

Phuoc Son said that these giant fish are currently highly popular and have become the flagship products among his handicraft creations.

For years, the 9X-born artisan has nurtured a strong passion for handicraft products. Through meticulous experimentation with various product lines, he has made his mark with decorative items such as epoxy resin fish tables and epoxy diorama models. Terrariums, copper-wire bonsai, and moss art paintings have also gained popularity for their aesthetic appeal and artistic value.

Over a year ago, Phuoc Son envisioned turning fabric, paper, and steel into vividly colored fish embodying good fortune and prosperity. With over 5 years of experience raising Japanese Koi fish, the 9X-born craftsman possesses a strong grasp of basic fish anatomy, allowing him to shape steel frames with relative ease. Still, bringing a giant fish to life in a convincing and refined form requires a great deal of time and craftsmanship.

After completing the steel frame, Son covers it with thin foam and carefully attaches each fish scale by hand. This stage requires great patience and precision, not only to ensure evenly arranged scales but also to create a natural layered effect.

Along with the layered scale effect, the dorsal, tail, and pelvic fins require equal care and finesse. Beyond shaping steel frames on fabric and paper, Son must carefully calculate and adjust the position and spacing of the steel ribs so that, once folded, the curves of the fins appear soft, graceful, and lifelike .

Keeping up with the trend

With his skilled hands, Phuoc Son has crafted hundreds of giant Koi and goldfish sculptures. Praised for their vivid beauty and auspicious feng shui symbolism, these oversized fish are popular choices for decorating homes, hotels, and coffee shops… Depending on size and the complexity of details, prices range from several hundred thousand to over one million VND.

“Decorative items are currently a “hot” trend. Oversized products such as giant ribbons, large paper flowers, and New Year decorative trays are especially popular with customers. That’s why I’ve expanded my product range and promoted it on social media to keep up with trends and meet market demand", Son added.

Phuoc Son’s passion for handicraft decorative products has begun to “bear fruit”. In addition to receiving orders from major coffee shops across the city, his social media presence on TikTok and PSON DECOR, has attracted millions of views and thousands of shares, generating a surge of orders from major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Danang. As a result, Son has secured a stable income while also mentoring and creating jobs for others who share the same passion.

Looking ahead, the 9X-born artisan shared that alongside refining his most popular products, he plans to invest in new decorative trends such as winter peach blossom boats and festive couplets printed on heat-transfer fabric. Featuring bright, vibrant colors, these items are designed to convey messages of luck and prosperity as the Lunar New Year approaches.
