Teams preparing and cooking their dishes

This year’s contest brought together 25 teams, each consisting of two members, who are students majoring in culinary arts at the college and intermediate levels from Hue Tourism College.

Within 60 minutes, each team prepared one Hue dish to serve four guests, meeting criteria on quality, presentation, food safety, and environmental friendliness. Dishes could be presented in either traditional or contemporary styles, combined with presentations and storytelling to highlight the cultural and heritage values of Hue cuisine.

The organizing committee encouraged contestants to use local ingredients and explore traditional dishes and regional specialties, especially those at risk of being forgotten, while also promoting creativity in culinary storytelling linked to tourism development. In addition to one First Prize, the organizers awarded two Second Prizes, three Third Prizes, one Potential Prize, and five Consolation Prizes.

This year’s contest also featured the participation of culinary artisans and professional chefs from Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Tri. The judging panel consisted of reputable culinary experts with extensive experience in training and professional development, ensuring fairness, expertise, and quality in the competition.

The contest serves not only as a professional platform but also as a bridge connecting the school, businesses, artisans, and the community. It offers students an opportunity to hone their skills, express their passion, and contribute to promoting Hue cuisine - an enduring cultural heritage of the Ancient Capital.

“Pro” Hue dishes in the heart of America

It took a whole month of scheduling before I could meet the famous Vietnamese-American chef Kevin Tien in Washington, D.C. It’s truly fascinating that in the heart of the U.S. capital, there’s a culinary space called Moon Rabbit - where this young man quietly plants seeds of creativity to bring Vietnamese cuisine to the world and inspire the Vietnamese expatriate community.

Dishes that instantly signal “Hue Tet is coming”

In Hue, the traditional Lunar New Year “Tet” does not arrive with fanfare. It begins quietly in the kitchen, from a pot of banh tet (a cylindrical sticky rice cake with mung beans and pork) glowing over the fire, from the warm scent of ginger, from a jar of mixed pickled vegetables. Just by looking at these dishes, people in Hue know that Tet is very near.
