The passing of Mr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane is a great loss for the Party, State, and people of Laos, and a loss for Vietnam as well, as the two countries have lost a great friend and close comrade who made significant contributions to nurturing the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.

Mr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, son of the late President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Kaysone Phomvihane, had close ties to Hue and made significant contributions to fostering friendship and cooperation between the two localities. From 1987 to 1991, while serving in the Savannakhet provincial government, he held the position of Deputy Governor of Savannakhet Province. From 1991 to 1993, he served as a member of the 5th Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and as Deputy Governor and Chief of Office of Savannakhet Province; from 1993 to 1995, he served as Provincial Party Secretary and Governor of Savannakhet Province.

This was also the period during which the relations between Hue City, formerly Binh Tri Thien Province and Thua Thien Hue Province, and Lao localities, including Savannakhet, were consolidated and developed. Through this cooperation, exchange, and connection between generations of leaders, the bond between Hue and Laos has continued to deepen, becoming an important foundation for Hue to continue advancing friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation with Lao localities in the coming periods.
