“Taking part in the 500-day Campaign meant racing against time, enduring harsh weather, and overcoming countless challenges. Yet it was also a source of pride and unforgettable memories. Whenever we found the remains of the fallen soldiers, we were overjoyed. No matter how exhausted we were, all the fatigue seemed to disappear. In many graves, nothing remained; the bones had long returned to the earth. The sense of sorrow was beyond words,” Major Thanh said in a subdued voice.
He recalled: “The samples sent for DNA analysis must come from hard tissue, such as teeth or bone. In reality, however, many of the remains were too fragile, yet we still had to collect samples. I told the medical team: ‘Even if this veteran’s bones are too deteriorated, please send the sample anyway. If a DNA test can be carried out, then we will have done all we can for him. If not, let him rest here, in his homeland of Phu Vang, in Hue City. The people of Phu Vang and Hue will forever be his loved ones. He will always have a family here’ ”. These heartfelt reflections are featured in ‘Hearts Filled with Gratitude’, a reportage by Quynh Anh published in the Reportage & Notes section of this weekend’s edition of Hue Today Weekly.
