Professionally skilled

After several attempts, I finally managed to make an exchange with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Trong Binh, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Diagnostic Imaging at University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University and Vice Head of the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Hue University Hospital. Dr. Binh shared with me a story about an elderly patient who - in a life-and-death situation - underwent emergency endovascular intervention. The patient was diagnosed with multiple conditions, including a vascular malformation in the small intestine that led to severe gastrointestinal bleeding. The emergency procedure was successfully carried out thanks to the combination of professional techniques and the support of modern Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) equipment. After the intervention, the patient underwent surgery and continued to receive intensive care until recovery and discharge from the hospital.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Binh is not only well-known among his colleagues and medical students as a highly skilled doctor but also as a dedicated lecturer who has trained many generations of doctors across the Central - Central Highlands Region and throughout the country. He is one of the physicians at University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University who is highly regarded for his expertise, having received formal and in-depth training both domestically and internationally. Notably, he spent five years in South Korea studying, conducting research, and receiving advanced training in interventional diagnostic imaging.

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University and Hue University Hospital have been constructed and developed under the “University - Hospital” model, serving as a center for training high-quality human resources in the medical field for the Central - Central Highlands Region as well as the entire country. The university and the hospital collaborate closely in scientific research and the advancement of high-level medical techniques, combining specialized training with continuous medical education to provide a highly competent workforce that meets the nation’s professional demands. As part of the training process and patient treatment, the university and the hospital regularly welcome international expert delegations for academic exchanges, experience sharing, and the transfer of advanced medical technologies. The reputation of the university and the hospital is further affirmed by the growing number of international student groups choosing them as their internship destinations.

When visiting the Faculty of Journalism and Communication at the University of Sciences, Hue University, we were truly amazed by the modern learning equipment provided for students, such as video cameras, photo cameras, recording studios, and video editing rooms. Ms. Tran Thi My Hao, an alumna of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, shared: “Through our courses and practical sessions, even while still students, we were able to write complete news articles, film and edit videos both on computers and smartphones, and independently produce various multimedia journalistic works.”

Dr. Phan Quoc Hai, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Sciences, Hue University, affirmed that with a teaching staff consisting mainly of Ph.Ds and Master’s degree holders, along with modern technological facilities, the faculty was committed to training high-quality human resources in the field of journalism and communication. According to surveys, in recent years, most students from the faculty have secured jobs immediately after graduation. Some have gone on to pursue postgraduate studies and have been retained by the university and the faculty to contribute to teaching and training the next generation of media professionals.

Human resources spreading across the nation

Dr. Bui Van Loi, Acting Vice President of Hue University, shared that Hue University, formerly The University of Hue, was established in March 1957 and restructured in 1994 under Decree No. 30/CP issued on April 4th, 1994 by the Government. Hue University is one of the three regional universities in Vietnam - a public tertiary institution comprising member universities, affiliated institutes, and subordinate units.

“Over more than 67 years of development, especially the past 30 years since its re-establishment under Government Decree 30/CP, Hue University has trained and awarded degrees to hundreds of thousands of doctors, pharmacists, engineers, and bachelor’s degree holders, along with tens of thousands of master’s degree holders and approximately 700 Ph.Ds”, Dr. Bui Van Loi proudly stated. “Many alumni have gone on to achieve successful careers and now hold key positions contributing to the development of both the region and the country. Among them are graduates who have attained senior leadership and management roles in ministries, central agencies, and top positions in the Party and local government across various levels.”

Over the past five years, Hue University has introduced 15 new undergraduate programs to meet current and future societal demands, along with 10 master’s programs and 5 doctoral programs. Currently, Hue University offers 18 academic programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels related to the semiconductor chip industry.

In its ongoing efforts to enhance training quality, Hue University has been implementing national and international quality accreditation plans, aligning with regional standards such as AUN-QA (ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance) and other international accreditation organizations. To date, 20% of its undergraduate programs have met national and AUN-QA accreditation standards. The university is also fundamentally and comprehensively reforming its curricula toward a competency-based integrated approach. It is actively developing and implementing academic programs based on the Conceive–Design–Implement–Operate (CDIO) model, with a strong focus on standardizing learning outcomes.

To date, Hue University has been refining its curriculum content and ensuring the development of technical CDIO workspaces to promote active, experiential, and self-directed learning. The focus is on increasing practical training and independent study time for students. The university also emphasizes collaboration with businesses, with internship programs lasting from 6 to 9 months to help students master practical skills, apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, and secure employment soon after graduation. According to surveys, over 80% of students reported finding jobs within one year of graduation, demonstrating the university’s alignment with labor market demands.

In addition, Hue University actively fosters entrepreneurship and innovation by providing training in career-related skills for faculty, staff, and students. Accordingly, Hue University has established a Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, invested in co-working spaces, and organized training courses on entrepreneurship and innovation for participants from the Central - Central Highlands Region and across the country. Hue University also participates in various national and local projects and programs related to entrepreneurship and innovation, contributing to the gradual completion of its innovation-driven startup ecosystem.

“With these achievements, it is envisaged that by 2045 Hue University will become a leading multi-disciplinary, research-oriented university system; a pioneer and core institution in Vietnam’s higher education landscape, ranked among the top in Asia and among top 500 universities globally,” Dr. Bui Van Loi expressed his hope.
