Removal of sharp bone causing breathing difficulties for a young man

TTH.VN - On the afternoon of January 6, Hue Central Hospital (HCH) reported that they had performed a rigid esophagoscopy to remove a sharp-pointed piece of pig bone for a 26 year-old man. This complicated emergency case required the quick, precise, and skillful intervention of the medical team.

Currently, the patient is gradually recovering and is being closely monitored for postoperative complications. Previously, the patient (Mr. Le T.V., 26 years old, from Xuan Phu Ward, Thuan HoaDistrict, Hue City) accidentally swallowed a pig bone while eating porridge, which caused difficulty in eating and swallowing. Due to family circumstances, the patient's family members did not take him to the hospital for immediate treatment.

The patient was admitted to the hospital in a condition of severe pain in the throat area, inability to eat or drink, mild difficulty breathing, and swelling and pain in the left neck region. Through clinical examination, computed tomography (CT) of the neck, and flexible esophagoscopy, a large bone fragment was detected in the thoracic segment of the esophagus, with the potential to perforate the esophagus and cause serious damage to surrounding organs.

The rigid esophagoscopy surgery to remove the foreign object under general anesthesia lasted over an hour. The team of doctors and nurses from the Pediatric -  Abdominal Emergency Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Anesthesiology departments skillfully removed the foreign object without causing damage to the esophagus. The foreign object was a pig bone measuring 30mm x 41mm, with sharp points, located in the thoracic segment of the esophagus, 20cm from the upper dental arch. After the surgery, Mr. V.'s health condition gradually improved and he is being closely monitored for postoperative complications.

Foreign objects in the digestive tract are common emergencies. If not detected and treated promptly, they can lead to many dangerous complications, such as esophageal perforation, damage to major blood vessels in the chest, esophageal abscess, mediastinitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, airway obstruction, or widespread infection that can be life-threatening. Medical experts recommend that if unusual symptoms are noticed after eating, one should immediately visit medical facilities for examination and early intervention. It is advised not to use methods such as swallowing hard foods to push the foreign object down, as this can lead to unpredictable complications.
