Ta Trach Reservoir has substantial flood-control capacity for downstream areas

According to the forecast issued by the city’s Hydro-Meteorological Station, widespread heavy rain will continue across the area from September 11 to 15, with high intensity concentrated from September 12 to 14. Total rainfall for the period is expected to reach 250 - 400 mm generally, with some areas exceeding 500mm.

The Sub-department of Irrigation and Climate Change assessed that, as this is currently the beginning of the flood season, the water levels at most irrigation and hydropower reservoirs remain low compared with their normal operating levels. With rainfall of 250 - 400 mm over 48 hours, the reservoirs would be able to fully absorb the flood.

To respond to the heavy rain expected in the coming days, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has prepared reservoir operation scenarios for forecast rainfall ranging from 250 to 500 mm, allowing for the proactive operation of the interconnected reservoir system when heavy rain occurs.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment has requested localities to remain alert to urban flooding, rising water levels in coastal and lagoon areas, as well as the risks of flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions. The City People’s Committee has also developed plans to proactively regulate and safely operate reservoirs and downstream areas under heavy-rainfall scenarios.
