More than 300 secondary students take part in the city-level English debate competition

The competition aims to enhance students’ English language skills

A total of 345 students from 129 secondary schools took part in the preliminary round. The contest was conducted in a combined format of written and multiple-choice questions, covering listening, reading, and writing skills. After this round, the 16 teams with the highest results (each consisting of three students) will be selected to advance to the semi-final and final rounds.

In the semi-finals and finals, students will compete in a debate format. The 16 teams will be drawn into eight pairs to engage in direct debates on topics related to themes in the secondary English curriculum. One team will argue in favor of the assigned topic, while the opposing team will present counterarguments. Each team will have 10 minutes to present its arguments.

English is currently a subject of strong emphasis in secondary schools. The English debate competition is intended to encourage students’ interest in and perform more effective in English at schools. Since the 2023–2024 school year, the English debate competition has been organized by the Department of Education and Training at both secondary and high school levels to promote the comprehensive development of students’ English skills across general education schools in the city.
