This year’s preliminary round attracted 110 students from high schools across the city, competing in a combined written and multiple-choice format, covering the skills of listening, reading, and writing. Each participating school registered a team of three students (excluding English-major students), with each student taking one test and receiving scores for their registered team.

The top 16 teams with the highest results will be selected to advance to the semi-final and final rounds, provided that no team member scored below 3,5 out of 10.

In the semi-final and final rounds, students will compete in a debate format. The 16 teams will be drawn into eight pairs to engage in direct debates on topics related to themes in the high school English curriculum. One team will argue in favor of, while the other in the opposition to the drawn topic by lot.

Since the 2023-2024 academic year, the English debate competition has been organized by the DOET at both secondary and high school levels, aiming to promote the comprehensive development of students’ English skills in schools across the city. The activity helps students strengthen their reasoning abilities and practice presenting ideas in English, thereby fostering greater interest and improved learning outcomes in English education.
