According to experts, diabetes is a disorder of glucose metabolism caused by defects in insulin secretion or reduced insulin action. Prolonged high blood sugar can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes, and nerves, leading to many serious health consequences. Globally, it has become a pressing medical issue. Data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) shows that in 2025, approximately 589 million people aged 20-79 are living with the disease, equivalent to 11.1% of the adult population. Notably, 43% of them have not yet been diagnosed; and every 6 seconds, one person dies from the disease or related complications.

In Vietnam, the IDF statistics show that in 2024, there were over 2.5 million people living with the disease. This rate has doubled in just 10 years, and is trending younger, with many cases seen in 9-13 year olds and young adults. Late detection puts patients at risk of severe complications, creating a significant burden on healthcare system and the society.

During the meeting, Hue Central Hospital organized various activities such as free blood glucose testing, blood pressure measurement, nutritional counseling, guidance on insulin use, home care, recognizing complications, and emphasizing the importance of treatment adherence. This was also an opportunity for patients to interact, share experiences, thereby enhancing their understanding and proactivity in health management.

This year, the World Diabetes Day on November 14 carries the theme “Diabetes and Well-being”, highlighting that treatment not only is limited to medical care, but also pays attention to the patients' mental and physical health and social integration. Aiming to help patients “live healthy - live happily - live usefully”, the program of Hue Central Hospital spreads a humanitarian message about prevention, early detection, and effective disease management.
