Slow travel is emerging as a popular trend among many tourists. With its rich natural landscape, deep cultural and heritage roots, traditional way of life, and the unique warmth of its people, Hue holds many advantages for developing this form of tourism. However, to truly develop slow travel, Hue still has much work to do.

In addition to historical sites and beautiful landscapes, shopping streets, culinary quarters, and other distinctive urban areas are essential factors contributing to the appeal and revenue of the tourism industry in many countries.

On July 12, 2025, the Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem, Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex of Monuments and Landscapes (located in Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh provinces, and Hai Phong City) was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage.

With more than 25 years of collaboration with Hue Monuments Conservation Center, Prof. Satoh Shigeru, a leading expert in the field of landscape study and urban planning at Institute of Urban and Regional Studies, Waseda University in Japan, has made many interesting discoveries about the mountain-water landscape in Hue. Hue Today Weekly had a meeting and interview with him about his exciting discoveries.

Flowing through the center of Hue City, the Huong River, a heritage river, is one of the iconic symbols of Hue Ancient Capital. Visitors to Hue will surely be enchanted not only by the Huong River but also by the peaceful, tranquil, and vibrant beauty of the Dong Ba River, the An Cuu River, and the Ngu Ha River, etc. This is why Hue is known as the “city of rivers”. When February drifts through the vast forests of the Truong Son range, A Luoi adorns itself with a vibrant purple cloak of myrtle blossoms. Hillsides, mountain slopes, and valleys are blanketed in a dreamy purple hue, painting a poetic and enchanting landscape that captivates visitors from near and far.

The spring afternoon sunshine on Vong Canh Hill convers the landscape with a golden glow, filtering through the whispering pine canopies and stretching silent shadows across the ground. A gentle breeze drifts by, carrying the fragrance of grass and trees along with the mild and damp scent of the winding Perfume River below.

French architectural works are considered an integral part of the cultural and historical landscape of the Ancient Capital. This has also motivated young people from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sciences, Hue University to seek ways to contribute to preserving the image of ancient Hue.

As a “healing” landscape designing trend, the emergency of forests in the city not only provides relaxation spaces but also connects people and brings them closer to nature.

When I was still very young, candies weren’t as diverse as they are now. We only had traditional local sweets, like areca-nut candy, ginger candy, glass candy, peanut candy, bird’s egg candy, and pulled sugar candy… Back then, my grandmother would often come back from the market with a small packet of areca-nut candy, which had a simple label with a picture of Hue landscape.
