Whale Worship Ceremony - Sacred rhythm of life in the lagoon region
HNN.VN - The Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system of Hue City stretches in the Northwest - Southeast direction along the coast, with a length of 68 km and a total surface area of 216 km². It comprises three interconnected lagoons: Tam Giang, Thuy Tu, and Cau Hai. With aquatic flora and fauna considered among the richest in Southeast Asia, this ecosystem has sustained generations of local residents.
Like other fishing villages whose lives depend on the sea and lagoons, the people of Dinh Cu Hamlet, Phu An Commune – now Dinh Cu Residential Quarter, My Thuong Ward – hold the Whale Worship Festival once every three years. Through this ritual, they express their wishes for favorable weather, bountiful harvests, abundant seafood, and a safe, peaceful community life.
In presenting these photographs by Hoang Le capturing the Whale Worship Festival and traditional boat racing of the people of Dinh Cu, Hue Today Weekly would like to once more humbly extend an invitation to readers near and far to visit Hue during its traditional folk festival seasons. Each festival offers a chance for tourists to immerse themselves in the jubilant yet sacred atmosphere of local life, to gain a deeper understanding of Hue, and to witness how the lives of Hue’s people remain simple yet filled with aspirations.
