As dawn breaks over Giang Dong in Quang Dien Commune, the first sunlight slips through bamboo groves and rooftops, signaling the start of a new day. In the fresh morning air, residents make their way to the flower gardens, tending to blooms that are entering a crucial stage of growth. For many generations, flower cultivation has long been woven into the fabric of life here.
According to Mr. Phan Thuy, who has spent many years in the flower-growing profession, growing flowers is more than a traditional crop; it has long been a key source of income for local households. Earnings from flower crops have enabled generations of growers to raise children, build homes, and secure a better future. As the flower-growing industry has developed, the material and spiritual lives of the people of Giang Dong have constantly improved.
Giang Dong has long been known for its fertile soil and favorable conditions for agricultural production. In the gardens of most local households, rows of golden chrysanthemum flowers, commonly known among residents as the “four-number” chrysanthemum, can be found easily. This plant is easy to cultivate, quick to mature, and supported by steady market demand.
While tending her family’s flower garden, Ms. Van Thi Tuy said she currently cultivates around 5,000 golden chrysanthemum plants. The crop is grown in three cycles a year, with each harvest taking about three months from planting. The flowers are sold at traditional markets or purchased directly by traders at the garden, providing growers with a convenient and reliable outlet for their products.
During full-moon days, festivals, and the Lunar New Year holiday, Giang Dong becomes even more vibrant. The laughter and conversations of residents harvesting flowers blend with the sounds of vehicles transporting fresh blooms to markets near and far, creating a vibrant picture of labor. According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hue, Head of Giang Dong’s Flower Growing Club, the village is currently home to 21 households specializing in flower cultivation across a total area of about 2 hectares. In addition to golden chrysanthemums, local growers also cultivate marigolds and cockscomb flowers to meet the demand for worship and ancestral offerings during festivals and the Lunar New Year.
Being a traditional crop, flower cultivation has brought a fairly stable income to local farmers. Golden chrysanthemum prices range from VND 7,000 to 15,000 per plant, and it can rise to about VND 40,000 during the Lunar New Year period. On average, each household earns between VND 70 million and 170 million annually from flower growing.
To capitalize on local advantages, Quang Dien Commune People’s Committee has recently approved a plan to expand a concentrated flower-growing zone in Giang Dong, covering 2 hectares of farmland along Pham Quang Ai Street.
Mr. Nguyen Van Du, head of Giang Dong village, affirmed that the initiative has received strong support and enthusiasm from residents. Beyond improving production efficiency, the concentrated flower zone is also expected to open up opportunities for community-based tourism, linking with experiential tours in Tam Giang lagoon area, thereby creating new momentum for the sustainable development of Giang Dong’s flower village and strengthening its brand name.
