The 21 birds were part of a flock of 44 that Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens had successfully conserved, raised, and bred. To help them adapt to their new habitat, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens assigned specialists to conduct health check-ups and provide technical support to Bach Ma National Park on the birds’ care, captive management, and breeding.
Mr. Mai Khac Trung Truc, Head of the Technical Department at Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, said the road transport of the birds from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue was carefully planned, with close attention paid to monitoring and assessing the health of each crested argus.

Bach Ma was chosen as the destination for the flock because its climate suits the species’ natural habits. Camera traps installed for conservation purposes also captured images of the wild crested argus in the area. In addition, Bach Ma National Park has sufficient personnel to care for the birds, keep them in captivity, and protect them.
At the handover ceremony, Bach Ma National Park’s leaders reaffirmed their commitment to mobilizing all available resources and making the best possible use of its enclosures and acclimatization facilities, while maintaining strict biosecurity standards prepared by the park.
Crested argus is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and is listed under Group IB under Vietnamese law, which covers wildlife species subject to strict protection.
