HNN.VN - In recent years, along with maintaining its strength in training traditional majors, Hue University has proactively opened many new majors that keep up with social trends and meet the demand for high-quality human resources. Choosing a major, do not following the crowd

For a long time, many students and parents chose majors based on intuition or followed the crowd, paying little attention to personal ability and the actual needs of society. This is particularly evident in the agriculture - forestry - fisheries sector. According to statistics from the annual Job Fair organized by the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University, domestic and foreign enterprises have a demand for 2,500 - 3,000 workers with a university degree, but the university can only supply about 1,000.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Duc, Rector of the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University, noted that the agriculture - forestry - fisheries sector is attracting more students, however, many students and parents still believe that studying this sector will be hard and have low income. This has resulted in a human resource imbalance between sectors; in which, many sectors having a surplus of labor, while agriculture - forestry - fisheries sector faces a severe shortage.

To address this, before each admission season, member universities of Hue University organize career counseling at many high schools and via online, providing information about majors and job opportunities. This gives students and parents a basis for choosing a major that aligns with their abilities, interests, and social needs.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Tung, Rector of the University of Sciences, Hue University, advises students not to choose a major following the crowd or emotion, but to prioritize a sector that suits their interests and personal abilities. This helps them stay dedicated and passionate to overcome challenges, and develop their future careers. Given the requirements and trends of the 4.0 technology revolution, students should consider new career paths such as information technology, digital transformation, automation, AI, green economy, circular economy, electronics - telecommunications, chemistry, environment, journalism, media, and architecture, etc.

Dr. Le Van Tuong Lan, Head of the Training and Student Affairs Department, Hue University, affirmed: “Hue University always considers providing proper career guidance to students a key mission. We organize early counseling, provide comprehensive information about majors and career paths, and have established an academic advising system to support students from their first year.”

New majors

According to experts, the current trend of choosing a major have seen notable changes, with interdisciplinary majors that integrate technology, such as information technology-medicine, Fintech, and AI - business, etc. This indicates that students are moving toward flexible careers that allow for global or remote work, which fits the digital economy model. Students now tend to choose majors based on their personal interests and actual capabilities, instead of just picking “hot” majors that follow the crowd.

Dr. Le Van Tuong Lan shared that in line with current career trends, Hue University has developed more than 30 new interdisciplinary programs, such as biotechnology - medicine, regenerative medicine, genetic medicine, endoscopic surgery and the application of artificial intelligence in diagnosis and treatment; information technology - economics; and engineering - management, etc. Additionally, the university also offers in-depth training program in sectors like microchip engineering, chip design, and semiconductor manufacturing, with synchronous investment in a modern laboratory system… These programs help students access many fields, develop creative and management skills which are suitable for a rapidly changing work environment.

In addition to traditional strengths in the majors of health, teacher training, and basic sciences, etc., Hue University has been investing in spearhead and high-tech majors to provide quality human resources for the economy in the digital age. Key fields of focus include information technology, data science, artificial intelligence, automation, and applied scientific research.

Collaboration with enterprises and research organizations is also highly valued by Hue University. This allows students to gain practical experience, enhance their skills, and be ready to work after graduation. A typical example is the microchip design technology training program under the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology major, which recently opened at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Hue University. This is a field that the Government and many large enterprises are interested in, marking a strategic step in high-tech human resource training.

According to Dr. Le Van Tuong Lan, the new majors play an important role and significance in training high-quality human resources for the semiconductor industry, a field that the Government has identified as one of the strategic development sectors for the 2025 - 2030 period. In-depth training in the field of microchip design is a very new direction; but it has great potential, contributing to the formation of a national semiconductor ecosystem as major tech corporations are now investing heavily in Vietnam and have a high demand for IC and chip design human resources.
