Ms. Nguyen Thi My Hanh claimed the first gold medal for Hue wrestling. Having competed in 3 SEA Games editions and secured 3 consecutive titles, despite her wealth of experience, Ms. My Hanh was not widely tipped to win gold at the 33rd SEA Games, as she was considered to be in the later stage of her career.
Nevertheless, in what was regarded as her final SEA Games appearance, Ms. My Hanh once again proved herself worthy of the title of the “undefeated queen” of Southeast Asia in the women’s 62kg freestyle category. Executing her signature “quan bo” move (a powerful body-lock takedown), she convincingly defeated her Philippine opponent by a dominant 10-0 scoreline in the final, thereby claiming her fourth consecutive SEA Games gold medal across four participations.
Following Ms. My Hanh’s victory, Ms. My Linh took to the mat in the women’s 53kg final against a Thai opponent. Despite making her SEA Games debut and lacking experience at the regional level, driven by a strong desire to win and a deep sense of national pride, the young wrestler from Quang Dien launched aggressive attacks from the opening seconds. After just 6 decisive “quan bo” moves, Ms. My Linh secured her first SEA Games gold medal, delivering the second gold for Team Vietnam with another commanding 10-0.
In the same women’s freestyle wrestling category, Ms. My Trang was the final wrestler from Hue team to compete in the 57kg final, facing an opponent from Myanmar. Like her 2 teammates, Ms. My Trang executed a decisive “quan bo” move to easily defeat her rival with a 10-0 scoreline, earning the third gold medal for Team Vietnam and marking her third consecutive SEA Games gold.
It’s known that My Hanh, My Trang, and My Linh are 3 biological sisters, all representing Vietnam and Hue wrestling teams. With their achievements at the 33rd SEA Games, Quang Dien girls set a world sporting record, becoming the first 3 sisters to compete together on the same national team, participate in the same SEA Games edition, and each win a gold medal in each category, each securing dominant victories with an identical 10-0 scoreline.
At the 33rd SEA Games, Hue’s sports contingent participated with 1 coach and 7 athletes competing in Jujitsu, Karate, archery, and wrestling, contributing to Team Vietnam’s overall performance with 3 individual gold medals in women’s freestyle wrestling and 1 silver medal in team Jujitsu.
