On the morning of July 15, Professor Bui Duy Tam had a talk with teachers and students of Quang Trung Primary School (Thuan Hoa Ward) about his journey of spreading the traditional ao-dai Vietnam.

Now in his 90s, Professor Tam shared with emotion at the talk that the ao-dai has accompanied him since he was a young man working in Hue Ancient Capital. As he grew older and moved abroad, weathering many ups and downs, he has always cherished and preserved the ao-dai, introducing it to many places around the world whenever the opportunity arose. In the Professor’s heart, mentioning Vietnam inevitably means mentioning the ao-dai.

At the talk, Professor Bui Duy Tam commended the teachers and students of Quang Trung Primary School for bringing ao-dai into the school - a school in Hue that has carried out many meaningful activities to spread the value of ao-dai.

He also expressed hope that in the future, more and more schools will continue to spread the image of ao-dai, not only within educational settings, but also at cultural and community events.

Professor Bui Duy Tam is a distinguished physician who currently lives in the USA. Although his professional expertise is in medicine, the ao-dai has become his deep passion.

“Once I happened to hear about my old native land…”

In 2000, in the short piece entitled “Hue Diary,” written when he returned for the first Hue Festival, musician Trinh Cong Son wrote, “When you have a place to return, or to visit from time to time, you are very fortunate. There, you have a river, a mountain, and you can find again your old friends whose hair used to be black has now turned grey. You might suddenly meet a Hue girl on the street and ask her, ‘Is there anything new in Hue now?’ And immediately, or perhaps by chance, she will recite the two lines from a poem by Bui Giang: “Da thua xu Hue bay gio/ Van con nui Ngu ben bo song Huong” (“Yes, sir, Hue now/ Still has Ngu Mount by the Huong river…”)
