Exciting boat racing festival in Trieu Son Dong village

HNN.VN - On the morning of February 8th (the 11th day of At Ty Lunar New Year, 2025), Trieu Son Dong Village council, in collaboration with Trieu Son Dong neighbourhood group (Huong Vinh Ward, Phu Xuan District), organized the Traditional Boat Racing Festival. The event celebrated Hue’s transition to a centrally-governed municipality as well as the 578th Memorial Day of the Founding Ancestors of Trieu Son Dong Village, while provided a festive atmosphere for locals to enjoy the Lunar New Year.

"On the tenth, we wrestle in Sinh Village,

On the eleventh, we race boats by Trieu Son’s shrine."

The festival was attended by Mr. Phan Ngoc Tho - Former Standing Deputy Secretary, former Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee; Mr. Vo Le Nhat, Member of City Party Committee, Secretary of District Party Committee, Chairman of Phu Xuan District People's Committee, along with local officials, the Trieu Son Dong Village Council, and a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators.

This year's competition featured 11 teams from the Trieu Son Dong and Trieu Son Nam neighbourhood groups. Using traditional bamboo-framed boats, each team had no more than seven members competing in 700m to 800m races along the Perfume River, in front of the Trieu Son Dong Village Shrine.

The competition consisted of three main rounds (Upper, Middle, Lower) and ten races: 1 Cung race, 8 Tien races, and 1 Thai Binh race. The Cung and Thai Binh races had three laps and six turnarounds, while the Tien races had two laps and four turnarounds, both of which end at the central point.

According to the Head of the Trieu Son Dong neighbourhood Group and Festival Organizer Nguyen Sau, the boat racing festival has been held annually for centuries ever since the village was established. However, due to the lack of historical records, the exact origin remains unknown. Despite this, village’s descendants continue to preserve the festival as a cherished cultural tradition.

Beyond its festive spirit, this year's event also commemorated several major milestones, such as the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam (February 3rd, 1930 - February 3rd, 2025), the Hue’s elevation to a centrally-governed municipality, and the 578th Memorial Day of the Founding Ancestors of Trieu Son Dong Village.
