200 soldiers helped local people harvest nearly 90 hectares of flooded rice

HNN.VN - On the afternoon of June 13, Hue City Military Command and relevant units mobilized 200 soldiers to Thuy Tan commune (Huong Thuy town) to help local people harvest nearly 90 hectares of off-season rice that had been flooded due to the impact of Storm No.1.

Although the entire city has completed the summer-autumn rice crop, due to the area’s unique soil conditions, nearly 90 hectares of rice in Thuy Tan commune have just reached harvest time. However, due to the impact of Storm No.1, all of this rice area was deeply flooded and it is facing the risk of waterlogging.

After conducting a field survey, the Hue City Military Command promptly coordinated with local stationed units (troops from Regiment 176, Division 968) and local residents (over 200 people) to help harvest the rice.

Right in the afternoon of that day, the harvest of the 90 hectares of rice was completed. The supporting forces helped transport the rice and organized drying to ensure its quality.

Currently, Hue City Military Command continues to strictly maintain combat readiness duty, command duty, on-call duty, and search and rescue duty in accordance with regulations. Furthermore, they also closely monitor weather developments and coordinate with local Party committees and authorities to mobilize residents in mountainous areas facing high risk of landslides to evacuate to safe locations.

At the same time, the City Military Command also directs the district, town, and city-level military commands to be proactive in mobilizing local forces to assist people in relocation and evacuation. In which, the actions have to be based on practical situations of each area. Additionally, they also organize patrols and arrange standby units at critical and unsafe locations to provide timely warnings.

Golden harvest on salty soil

On the 10-acre field of red chiem rice (a traditional red rice grown in brackish lowlands of Hue City, sown by April and harvested by July), each planting season requires 40 to 50 hired laborers, and the harvest stretches over several days. Left untended and unfertilized, the rice grows naturally under the generous sun and rain. Some call it “heaven’s rice” — a variety grown from the grace of Tam Giang’s waters.
