| City leaders commend PTVN’s contributions to addressing the post-war legacy of landmines and unexploded ordnance |
PTVN is a U.S. non-governmental organization working in post-war recovery, mine risk education, victim assistance, and community development.
On July 25, 2024, in Hue City, PTVN and Hue Union of Friendship Organizations signed a framework cooperation agreement for the 2024-2029 period, laying the groundwork for implementing programs and projects across the city.
Under the agreement, both sides will give priority to disadvantaged areas severely impacted by landmine contamination, as well as areas where land needs to be cleared to improve infrastructure development, production, livelihoods, and local communities.
From May to December 2025, PTVN provided over VND 403 million to implement the ‘Landmine and Unexploded Ordnance Risk Education’ project in Phong Dinh Ward. The project featured workshops, training sessions for community communicators, and a drawing competition for students, thereby raising awareness and improving skills in preventing accidents involving landmines and unexploded ordnance.
At present, Hue Union of Friendship Organizations is seeking approval from the competent authorities for the ‘Survey and Clearance of Landmines and Unexploded Ordnance to Support Hue City’s Socio-Economic Development in 2026-2030’ project, with a proposed budget exceeding VND 104.8 billion. The project is expected to be implemented citywide, encompassing non-technical surveys, technical surveys, battlefield clearance, mobile mine clearance, and landmine and unexploded ordnance risk education.

During the meeting, Vice Chairman of Hue City People’s Committee Tran Huu Thuy Giang acknowledged PTVN’s contributions to addressing the post-war legacy of landmines and unexploded ordnance in Hue.
He said that the implementation of projects related to landmines and unexploded ordnance still presents procedural challenges that require joint coordination and resolution. The city is working to address these issues and ensure that the projects are carried out in accordance with the law.
On behalf of the PTVN’s delegation, Ms. Clair Yunker thanked Hue City leaders for receiving them and facilitating PTVN’s activities in the city. At the same time, she stated that PTVN is ready to prepare for its programs and projects in Hue.
According to Ms. Clair Yunker, addressing the legacy of landmines and unexploded ordnance goes beyond a humanitarian effort that ensures public safety; it also contributes to clearing land for infrastructure projects, enhancing livelihoods, and socio-economic development. “We are very excited and ready to begin our work in Hue,” said Ms. Clair Yunker.
She said that in addition to landmine clearance, PTVN plans to support socio-economic development in areas cleared of landmines, while promoting people-to-people exchanges, connections, and diplomacy. While some key administrative steps remain to be finalized for project approval, PTVN will coordinate with the city to make the necessary preparations for the effective implementation of its programs in Hue.
