“Fueling” the journey of knowledge

Female student Bui Thi Hue, an ethnic Muong from Thanh Hoa, achieved an excellent score of 27.75 in 3 subjects (including a perfect 10 in Geography), becoming the new top-scorer of a major at Hue University of Education. However, right after being admitted, she was unable to enroll due to her family’s difficult circumstances.

Hue shared that the biggest turning point in her life was when her father abandoned the family, leaving the burden of making a living and raising her for the past 4 years on her mother’s shoulders. Determining not to let her mother’s sacrifices go to waste, she has strived to overcome adversity and remained committed to achieving her chosen goal.

Hue’s path to becoming a teacher grew uncertain as her family’s hardship forced her to consider staying home to support her mother and care for her two younger siblings. Caught between family responsibilities and her dream of studying, she chose to sacrifice.

After 3 phone calls of encouragement, Truong The Quy, a lecturer from Hue University of Education patiently persuaded and supported Hue to return to her studies. Thanks to his timely guidance, she confirmed her enrollment on the Ministry of Education and Training’s system before the September 2 deadline. Alongside assisting with the online enrollment, Mr. Quy also provided her with 1 million VND to cover travel expenses to Hue for her studies.

Writing the next chapter of the dream from loss

At the opening ceremony of the new academic year, Hue University of Education discovered another newly admitted top-scorer facing the hardship of being orphaned by both parents. She is Pham Thi Hau from Da Nang City, who scored 29 points and became the top-scorer of the Literature Education major.

At 18, Hau has endured two irreplaceable losses of loved ones. In grade 5, her mother passed away in an accident. Her father later lost his ability to work due to severe illness, and she went to live with her uncle. Just as she entered grade 11, her father also passed away from illness. Hau shared: “Losing both parents is the deepest pain and greatest loss of my life. But what has happened is already fate and cannot be changed. Instead of despairing, I have always tried my best in my studies and nurtured the dream of becoming a literature teacher, so that my parents can rest in peace”.

Given Hau’s circumstances, Hue University of Education connected with 2 alumni from the Faculty of Mathematics to help award her a scholarship worth 10 million VND. Additionally, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, a lecturer from the Faculty of Literature, awarded 2 scholarships, which is worth 5 million VND per portion to the new top-scorers, including Bui Thi Hue and Pham Thi Hau. Alumna Huynh Thi Ny, also from the Faculty of Literature, presented the two students with additional scholarships of 500,000 VND per portion.

Dr. Le Van Tuong Lan, Head of Training and Student Affairs Office at Hue University, shared that this year’s university admissions saw many new top-scorers at the university, school, and faculties, some of whom come from challenging backgrounds. Students like Hue and Hau are among them. At the opening ceremony of the new academic year, these students received scholarships and gifts of encouragement from Hue University and its member institutions, which connected with businesses and benefactors to provide both financial and spiritual support to help them cover their study expenses. Hue University and its institutions will continue to seek support from benefactors and businesses to provide scholarships and assistance, ensuring that these students are not alone throughout their studies as they pursue their dreams.
