Fishermen in Phong Quang Ward land large early-season herring hauls

In Phong Phu and Phong Quang wards, there are currently more than 200 nearshore fishing boats, many of which specialize in herring fishing. Fishermen reported that over the past week, herring have appeared in large numbers in nearshore waters. On average, each boat brings in between 5 and 10 quintals of herring per day, along with other seafood such as mackerel, anchovies, shrimp, and small squid. Many boats have recorded high yields over consecutive trips.

As soon as the herring reach shore, traders purchase them immediately at prices ranging from 10.000 - 15.000 VND per kilogram, depending on size. At these prices, after deducting fuel and labor costs, each short fishing trip still provides fishermen with a fairly good profit, contributing to more stable livelihoods.

There are currently nearly 1.900 nearshore fishing boats in the city, primarily engaged in herring, mackerel, anchovy, and mackerel fishing. Based on local fishermen’s experience, herring typically appear in abundance at the beginning of the year, when weather conditions are favorable and food sources are plentiful. This is considered an early-season “gift from the sea”, providing added motivation for fishermen to head offshore and remain committed to the sea.
