Mr. Nguyen Duc Loc, Director of Hue City Museum of History, affirmed this at the 85th anniversary of the Death of the Patriotic Phan Boi Chau (1940 - 2025), held on the morning of November 21.

H.E. Phan Boi Chau (1867-1940), whose birth name was Phan Van San and pen name Sao Nam, was born into a Confucian family in Dan Nhiem village, Xuan Hoa commune, Nam Dan district (now part of Van An commune), Nghe An province.

With a passionate heart and noble ideals, Phan Boi Chau traveled and worked throughout the country, founding and leading many patriotic organizations and movements such as “Duy Tan Hoi” (1904), Dong Du movement (1905), and “Vietnam Quang Phuc Hoi”. From a patriotic Confucian intellectual, he evolved into a bourgeois democratic revolutionary and approached the journey of the proletarian revolution.

After many years doing patriotic activities, in 1925, Phan Boi Chau was arrested by the French colonial authorities in Shanghai (China) and brought back to Hanoi for imprisonment. Under pressure from the nationwide popular struggle, the French were forced to grant him a pardon and placed him under house arrest in Hue. During 15 years in Hue, Phan Boi Chau lived a simple and harmonious life, embraced by the love of the local people, who affectionately called him “Ben Ngu Old Man”.

Although living under a “caged life”. He continued to inspire and awaken the spirit of patriotism and sense of responsibility among the people, especially among the youth and students, including figures such as comrade Nguyen Chi Dieu, General Secretary Le Duan, and General Vo Nguyen Giap.

On October 29, 1940, Mr. Phan Boi Chau breathed his last in his thatched house on Ben Ngu slope.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Loc, with a heart full of gratitude for the great contributions and efforts of Phan Boi Chau in the patriotic struggle of the early 20th century, the activity commemorating the 85th anniversary of the death of the patriotic scholar Phan Boi Chau reflected both remembrance and the honoring of his noble life, pure morality, virtuous soul, and indomitable spirit.

Tet & the concept of time

Since the primordial dawn of history, primitive humans were already conscious of time. They observed the rotation of the universe and carved markings on cave walls to record the passage of day and night. From natural phenomena, weather patterns, and cosmic cycles, humans created calendars to serve daily life and agricultural production.

Hue’s yellow apricot blossom… snubbed by the emperor

Ask the people of Hue what flower they love most, and most will likely answer: the apricot blossom. To put it more formally, “hoang mai” - yellow apricot, without a doubt. Don’t believe it? Come to Hue and see for yourself! There’s a whole movement called “Yellow apricot blossom in front of the entrance”; a completed research project on “Conservation and development of Hue’s yellow apricot variety (Hue’s Hoang mai)”; a scientific conference on developing Hue’s Hoang mai into a key local product, aimed at successfully realizing the project to build Thua Thien Hue province (now Hue City) into Vietnam’s yellow apricot homeland. My friend, journalist Minh Tu, even published a book called “In front of the house stands a yellow apricot tree”, which sold out instantly, was reprinted, and translated into foreign languages to great acclaim.

Touching the Ancient Soul of Hue

On a pure morning, I bumped into groups of visitors strolling along the path leading into Hue Imperial Citadel. Cradling her camera in both hands, Ms. Marie, a French tourist, asked the guide in a gentle voice: “May I… try on Vietnam’s traditional costume?”. That question seemed to open an unexpected journey for them, an experience that felt as if they could touch the ancient soul of Hue
