According to Mr. Nguyen Vinh Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, academic excellence in upper secondary education is closely linked to the process of identifying, inspiring, and nurturing students’ abilities from earlier stages of schooling. Therefore, developing a pool of outstanding students should not be the sole responsibility of Quoc Hoc - Hue High School for the Gifted, but should become a regular activity, which is strategically guided by clear objectives, and seen as a coordinated responsibility of the educational sector.
One of the key issues raised at the workshop was the need to reform approaches to identifying and nurturing gifted students. Rather than relying solely on grades or exam results, lower secondary schools should focus on recognizing students’ abilities through their learning process, experiential activities, academic clubs, and creative projects. Nurturing programs should be tailored to each age group, fostering a passion for learning, independent thinking, self-directed learning, and creativity, while avoiding an excessive focus on academic achievements or prolonged exam preparation that places undue pressure on students.
The workshop also emphasized the need to establish effective coordination mechanisms between Quoc Hoc - Hue High School for the Gifted and lower secondary schools. Quoc Hoc should play a leading role in academic expertise by sharing teaching experience and working with lower secondary schools to organize subject-focused seminars, academic clubs, and activities that introduce students to specialized subjects. Lower secondary schools, meanwhile, should proactively assess students’ abilities and aspirations, while creating opportunities for teachers to exchange professional knowledge and access high-quality learning resources.
Through the workshop, Quoc Hoc - Hue High School for the Gifted and the city’s education sector aim to establish an effective and sustainable mechanism for identifying and nurturing outstanding students, thereby improving the quality of gifted education.
On this occasion, students from Nguyen Tri Phuong, Tran Cao Van, Chu Van An, Thong Nhat, and other lower secondary schools took part in an experiential festival featuring specialized subjects, with a range of activities designed to help them explore their abilities, interests, and identify their learning orientations.
