The legacy of generations of intellectuals
The year 2027 will mark the 70th anniversary of Hue University, a long journey shaped by the contributions of generations of academics and intellectuals.
Looking back to when Hue University was re-established in 1994, the entire system had only a few dozen professors, associate professors and PhD holders. Today, it has a substantial academic workforce comprising 18 professors, 240 associate professors, 869 PhD holders and thousands of staff with master’s degrees. This is a key resource for improving the quality of education, scientific research and technology transfer.
Dr. Le Van Tuong Lan, Head of the Training and Student Affairs Department at Hue University, said that in 1996, the university offered just 60 undergraduate majors and 30 master’s specializations. Today, its academic portfolio has expanded significantly to more than 150 undergraduate majors and hundreds of master’s, doctoral and medical specialist programs. Hue University has proudly awarded degrees to hundreds of thousands of bachelors, engineers and doctors, tens of thousands of master’s graduates and 678 PhD graduates. They have brought their knowledge and youthful energy to communities across the country, contributing to the development of their homeland.
In 2025, enrolment in full-time undergraduate programs reached an impressive nearly 99% of the university’s target. Hue University is now home to more than 65.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The 2024 - 2026 period has also seen significant progress in advanced training, with more than 330 doctoral candidates successfully recruited. Generations of alumni have gone on to become leaders of central ministries and agencies, respected scientists, successful entrepreneurs and heads of local administrations.
To keep up with a rapidly changing world, member institutions have embraced digital transformation as a key breakthrough. A smart university governance system is gradually taking shape, with management processes being digitized, digital learning resources expanded, and modern online learning platforms introduced. This transformation goes beyond technological infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on strengthening digital competencies among both lecturers and students.
A range of new programs reflecting emerging trends have been introduced, including semiconductor microchips, artificial intelligence, advanced materials technology, pharmaceutical technology and educational management… Postgraduate programs are also being continuously updated in line with international standards, with a greater emphasis on advanced research components. Since 2023, more than 50 doctoral and master’s students from Hue University have received full research scholarships from prestigious international organizations.
Strategy for a new chapter
Hue University’s Development Strategy for 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2045, emphasizes governance reform, the provision of high-quality human resources, flexible academic programs, quality assurance and international integration, with the long-term goal of developing Hue University into a national university.
For the 2026 - 2030 period, Hue University identifies education and training as its central mission and fundamental priority, with an emphasis on substantive improvements in quality and stronger alignment with the development needs of the country, localities and businesses. These efforts will be supported by modern, digitalized, transparent and data-driven university governance, guided by the principle: “Standardized and digitalized - Modern - Interdisciplinary - Practice-oriented”.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Vu Quoc Huy, Acting President of Hue University, emphasized that, based on its existing strengths and distinctive characteristics, Hue University will prioritize six key clusters of disciplines. The first covers digital technology, artificial intelligence, data science and digital transformation, aimed at meeting demand for human resources in AI, Big Data, Cloud Computing, IoT, Blockchain, the digital economy and digital governance. The second encompasses semiconductor technology, electrical and electronic engineering, and advanced materials, with member universities working alongside businesses to contribute to the national semiconductor workforce development program. The third focuses on biotechnology, advanced biomedicine, medicine, pharmacy and healthcare, with an orientation toward precision medicine, digital health, public health and biosafety. The fourth comprises high-tech agriculture, natural resources, the environment, energy and sustainable development, addressing issues particularly relevant to the Central and Central Highlands regions, including climate change, the marine economy, renewable energy and green development. The fifth covers economics, law, management, logistics, smart tourism, cultural industries and foreign languages, linked to international trade, law in the digital environment, heritage tourism and the creative industries. The sixth focuses on teacher education, foreign languages, and the social sciences and humanities, with substantial reforms aligned with Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Program and the integration of digital competencies, STEM education and skills for international integration.
Drawing on identity, toward the future
According to Prof. Nguyen Vu Quoc Huy, academic programs in the new phase will be designed around flexible modules with clearly defined learning outcomes, enabling students to accumulate credits and pursue double majors, interdisciplinary studies or blended online programs offered jointly by institutions in Vietnam and abroad.
Hue University will develop a unified digital education ecosystem serving three goals: enabling students to personalize their learning pathways; helping lecturers innovate their teaching methods; and allowing administrators to make forecasts and management decisions based on data. A strong culture of quality will also be embedded throughout the university, with the goal of increasing the number of academic programs accredited to regional and international standards by 2030. International cooperation will be expanded in substantive ways through dual-degree programs, lecturer and student exchanges, and joint research.
An open, inclusive and creative learning environment deeply rooted in Hue’s identity will continue to support students throughout their academic journeys, with particular attention given to disadvantaged students, those from remote areas and those pursuing specialized fields of study.
With a solid foundation built over nearly seven decades and an ambitious strategy for its next phase of development, Hue University is steadily strengthening its position as a major center for education and research, while confidently pursuing greater regional and international standing.
