Over 350 staff members of Hue Central Hospital participating in a blood donation activity to ensure the sufficient blood reserve for patient treatment

According to the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Hue Central Hospital, the facility needs approximately 4,500 units of blood each month to supply 10 hospitals in Hue City and Quang Tri Province. However, in June 2025, the amount of blood received was only about 2,700 units. As of July 10, only around 800 additional units had been collected, still far below the actual demand. The main reason for the shortage is that students, the primary blood donor group, are currently on summer break. Additionally, the recent administrative restructuring under the two-tier government model has disrupted local blood donation campaigns.

In response to the above situation, Hue Central Hospital recently instructed its Trade Union and Youth Union to collaborate with the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center to launch the voluntary blood donation program “White Blouses - Pink Hearts.” This initiative not only spreads the spirit of compassion but also demonstrates the social responsibility and noble actions of healthcare professionals in their life-saving mission.

The program received enthusiastic participation from medical staff across the hospital. In just one day, nearly 400 units of blood and platelets were collected from over 350 registered hospital staff. Dr. Bui Minh Quan (Department of Functional Exploration), a regular blood donor shared: “I often work in the Emergency Department, so I witness many cases where blood transfusions are critical to saving lives. To me, donating blood is not just a responsibility, but a deeply human act to help save patients”.

Alongside the blood donation drives organized by the hospital, the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center will continue working with schools, businesses, and organizations with large workforces, such as Aeon Mall, Dong Lam Cement Joint Stock Company, and Scavi Hue to schedule additional blood donation events. At the same time, the hospital also sends official letters to various units to encourage blood donation, proactively securing the blood supply needed for patient treatment.

Dr. Ton That Minh Tri, Level II Specialist and Director of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center at Hue Central Hospital shared his hope that once the blood donation mobilization committees at the ward and commune levels are fully restructured, blood donation activities will regain momentum. “In the meantime, as we await large-scale donation drives, we continue to encourage internal donations to maintain the essential blood supply for emergency and treatment demands,” Dr. Tri emphasized.

Hue Central Hospital is also recognized as one of the leading institutions in the voluntary blood donation movement. For two consecutive years, 2023 and 2024, the hospital was awarded certificates of merit by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society for its outstanding achievements in blood donation efforts. Many individuals from the hospital were honored at the 2024 blood donation recognition ceremony, including Dr. Nguyen Van Anh with 50 donations, technician Do Van Minh with 40 donations, the Blood Transfusion Department team along with 7 other staff members who received commendations from the Chairman of Hue People’s Committee for their significant contributions.
