Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the City People’s Committee Tran Huu Thuy Giang emphasized that the Tree-Planting Festival is an activity of political, social, and environmental significance, held annually to study and follow the instructions of President Ho Chi Minh, while also concretizing the city’s policy of green economic development and rapid, sustainable growth.

In 2025, the work of forest management, protection, and development across the locality continued to achieve positive results. Forest coverage remained stable at 57.18%. The city planted more than 6,500 hectares of forest, added approximately one million scattered trees, and produced around 18 million seedlings for reforestation. Timber output reached about 600,000 cubic meters. The city now has over 14,000 hectares of large-timber plantations and over 15,000 hectares of forest certified for sustainable management.

“These results reflect the coordinated and responsible engagement of Party committees, authorities at all levels, the Fatherland Front, mass organizations, and the broad consensus and active participation of the people in the cause of forest protection and development,” emphasized Vice Chairman of the City People’s Committee Tran Huu Thuy Giang.

Amid Hue’s drive to develop as a heritage, cultural, ecological, and landscape-oriented city that is environmentally friendly, tree planting and reforestation not only protect ecosystems and respond to climate change but also create vital resources for economic growth. These efforts expand opportunities for eco-tourism, the forest economy, and the carbon economy, contributing to the realization of double-digit economic growth aligned with sustainable development.

The tree-planting activity at Thuy Tien Lake Park was held with an aim to not only expand urban green space but also gradually shape an ecological area and a destination for tourism, recreation, and leisure, transforming natural potential into tangible economic value and directly contributing to the city’s growth in the new phase.

Based on that spirit, Hue City leaders call on all levels, sectors, localities, and the entire population to actively respond to tree-planting and forest-growing movements; every person plants trees, every household plants trees; all people raise their awareness and responsibility in forest management and protection, preserve natural resources, and join hands to build Hue into a green heritage city that develops rapidly and sustainably.

Immediately after the launching ceremony, Hue City leaders, together with officials, soldiers, and the public took part in tree planting on the grounds of Thuy Tien Lake Park, kicking off the 2026 tree-planting and afforestation campaign across the entire area.

Eating vegetarian, missing Hue

On the Lantern Festival (the Full Moon of the First Lunar Month) more than 15 years ago, the most “pure Hue native” friend I know, architect Nguyen Trong Huan, and I put on thin raincoats and walked together through the light, drifting drizzle to search for Hue’s culinary specialties. Having lived in this city for many years, Huan still longed for the flavors he once tasted.

Hue’s yellow apricot blossom… snubbed by the emperor

Ask the people of Hue what flower they love most, and most will likely answer: the apricot blossom. To put it more formally, “hoang mai” - yellow apricot, without a doubt. Don’t believe it? Come to Hue and see for yourself! There’s a whole movement called “Yellow apricot blossom in front of the entrance”; a completed research project on “Conservation and development of Hue’s yellow apricot variety (Hue’s Hoang mai)”; a scientific conference on developing Hue’s Hoang mai into a key local product, aimed at successfully realizing the project to build Thua Thien Hue province (now Hue City) into Vietnam’s yellow apricot homeland. My friend, journalist Minh Tu, even published a book called “In front of the house stands a yellow apricot tree”, which sold out instantly, was reprinted, and translated into foreign languages to great acclaim.

Touching the Ancient Soul of Hue

On a pure morning, I bumped into groups of visitors strolling along the path leading into Hue Imperial Citadel. Cradling her camera in both hands, Ms. Marie, a French tourist, asked the guide in a gentle voice: “May I… try on Vietnam’s traditional costume?”. That question seemed to open an unexpected journey for them, an experience that felt as if they could touch the ancient soul of Hue
