A fairy-tale fragrance in the heart of the city

HNN.VN - In the seventh month of the lunar calendar, gold apple fruits (diospyros decandra) begin turning a rich golden yellow on the branches of old trees. From markets to social media, the small fruit, woven into the childhood memories of generations, can be seen everywhere…

For Hue people, the Diospyros decandra tree is more than a fruit tree; it carries spiritual significance, often standing beside shrines, village communal houses, and ancient pagodas, etc. Therefore, the season of ripe gold apple fruits not only brings back a familiar fragrance, but also awakens a part of the cultural memory of the ancient capital.

In front of the ancestral worship hall of the Than Van family’s, Duong Xuan branch (Thuy Xuan Ward), stands a Diospyros decandra tree, which is more than 300 years old. This is the first Heritage Tree in Hue, which was recognized in 2010. According to the family’s genealogical records, the tree was propagated from Nguyet Bieu Village (now in Thuy Bieu Ward, Hue City), and planted in 1698 to mark the family’s land boundary and the moment they settled down in the new land.

The trunk measures roughly 1.4 meters in diameter, with exposed roots spanning over 10 meters in circumference at the base. Beneath its canopy stand a heritage plaque and an inscribed stele recounting the ancient tree’s history.

Further along Than Trong Phuoc Street (Thuy Xuan Ward), another century-old Diospyros decandra tree rises beside a shrine built during the reign of Emperor Khai Dinh. Nearly everyone in the old Thuy Bieu area knows this tree, since the fragrance of its ripe fruit spreads along the street for weeks every fruiting season.

Eighty-year-old Ton That Au, who looks after the shrine, said that he had seen the Diospyros decandra tree here since he was a child. As the shrine was built under royal order and its history is documented in surviving records, the site has always been carefully preserved and largely untouched.

These days, as people travel along many streets, they can easily catch a faint fragrance drifting on the breeze. It is then that we realize we are in the midst of a fragrant, sweet autumn filled with the fruits of Hue…

Village culture in the city

It is not even the end of the sixth lunar month, but I have already heard elderly men in my neighborhood enthusiastically asking one another how the upcoming Autumn offering ceremony will be organized at the village communal house, and whether the heads of the clans have made plans to meet yet. It may seem strange that amid the bustle of city life, these elderly men are passionately talking about village affairs. The village communal house is not far away either, just a few dozen meters from my house. “The city also began with villages. Preserving the roots of the village means preserving its culture for future generations. You young people should remember that,” they would tell me whenever I asked.

Hue - A “Living Museum City”

As heritage cities around the world search for sustainable development models, the concept of a “living museum city” is emerging as a direction many localities aspire to. With its distinctive cultural heritage and unique identity, Hue has every potential to become a typical example of this model.

Thanks to the fertile alluvial soil, reliable water sources, and long-standing farming experience, the people of Huong An Ward are gradually transforming this land into one of the largest green onion cultivation areas in Hue City.

In the not-too-distant future, the more than 120-hectare area south of Hue city center will move beyond being a newly developed site to take shape as a “university city” - a space for living, learning, and creativity, gathering the intellectual elite of Central Vietnam.
