According to Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, this was an exceptionally complex surgery, implemented as part of the hospital's strategy to develop high-tech and specialized medical techniques. Combining the removal of two massive polycystic kidneys and performance of  kidney transplant in one surgery requires high-level expertise, seamless coordination among multiple departments, and strict control of technical factors.

The patient, a 53-year-old man residing in Thanh Thuy Ward (Hue), suffered from hereditary polycystic kidney and liver disease, leading to end-stage renal failure. His two kidneys had grown abnormally large, causing abdominal compression, persistent pain, and severe difficulties in daily activities, requiring renal replacement therapy. After comprehensive evaluation and strict screening, both the living kidney donor and the recipient fully met all professional standards for kidney transplantation.

The surgery lasted over three hours and involved many leading experts. Following the surgery, the patient recovered well. Within just 48 hours, kidney function improved significantly, vital signs stabilized, and the patient was conscious with no complications. After one week of treatment, the patient returned to near-normal daily activities and was discharged after two weeks of observation.

The success of the surgery not only brings hope to patients, but also marks an important step forward for Vietnamese medicine in the field of organ transplantation, gradually approaching the level of advanced medicine worldwide.
