Technology, productivity, quality standard, and market solutions are needed to bring Hue cajeput essential oil to national-product status

Implementing the National Product Development Program to 2030 in the province (now Hue City), on May 15th, 2022, the Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 1133/QD-UBND announcing the list of key products in the categories of local specialties, traditional craft villages, rural industries, handicraft and industrial products, and services for the 2022-2025 period, along with support solutions for developing key products in the city featuring 28 products. Based on the workshop on consultations held at by the end of 2023 co-organized by DOST and the Department of Science, Technology, and Engineering, DOST selected Hue cajeput oil as the product proposed for national recognition.

Hue cajeput essential oil is not only consumed domestically but also exported to Asian, European, and American markets. The product is distributed through retail channels, supermarkets, trade centers, and e-commerce platforms. Hue cajeput essential oil received its Geographical Indication Certificate in 2020 (Decision No. 4656/QD-SHTT), helping confirm its origin and quality. Many OCOP-certified products have established strong credibility in the market.

According to national product development orientations to 2030, Hue aims to position cajeput essential oil as a national product representing the cultural value and quality of Vietnam, on par with signature products of other regions. At the workshop, representatives from departments, sectors, and experts emphasized the need for synchronous solutions: improving product quality; developing markets and branding; ensuring conservation and sustainable development; cooperation and supportive policies.

Developing stable, high-quality raw material areas of cajeput trees contributes to elevating Hue cajeput essential oil into a national product

To be recognized as a national product, a product must meet requirements such as: production based on advanced technology with intellectual property protection capability; large-scale production with high added value and strong competitiveness; ability to replace imported goods or deliver export value; and having positive, widespread impacts on socio-economic or defence activities.

Based on these criteria, the workshop focused on exchanges, analysis, and proposals related to: applying productivity-quality improvement and innovation solutions to enhance the quality of cajeput oil toward national product development; current production and business conditions of cajeput essential oil in Hue City; application of advanced technologies and production processes to standardize and improve the quality of Hue cajeput oil; and the effectiveness of applying science and technology to build linked production–consumption models that generate high value from cajeput trees.
