Delegates engage in discussion at the conference

Such was one of the key observations at the scientific conference titled “Historical Figures in the Defense of National Sovereignty at Thuan An Seaport and Hue Imperial City (1883 - 1885)”, held on the morning of June 24th.

The conference was organized by Hue Historical Science Association, with the participation of experts and researchers.

From the moment the French colonialists opened fire to invade Vietnam in the mid-19th century, they were met with fierce resistance from the entire population as well as the Nguyen Dynasty's military forces. With colonial ambitions, the French gradually occupied many parts of the country, eventually launching a major offensive targeting the nation's “nerve center”, which was Hue Imperial City during a critical historical period between 1883 and 1885.

More than 140 years have passed since the heroic and tragic chapter of Vietnamese resistance against French colonialism, marked by the fall of Thuan An in 1883 and the uprising at Hue Imperial City in 1885. Yet, remnants of this era, monuments, historical figures, and key events, still stand today as enduring reminders of the patriotism and fighting spirit of our forebears who sacrificed their lives to defend the sovereignty of the nation.

At the conference, delegates presented research papers and engaged in direct discussions. A key focus was the strategic role of Thuan An Seaport and its defense system in protecting Hue Imperial Capital during the French invasion.
